Why are there holes in the painted coating of some bulbs?

Our glass bulbs are painted using traditional methods to achieve their authentic vintage look, and small imperfections such as tiny pinholes or slight variations in the coating can sometimes occur. These come from things like a speck of dust on the glass before the coating is applied.

While we do our best to minimize them, they are a normal part of this style of finish and not considered defects. In fact, many customers – ourselves included! – feel these subtle variations add to the character and retro charm of the bulbs, as they were a common occurrence with original coated incandescent bulbs of yesteryear, too.

That said, we want you to feel good about your purchase. If you feel that you have an excessive amount of these imperfections that are unacceptable to you, reach out to support to request replacements.

If any degree of imperfections is unacceptable for you, we would recommend opting for our polycarbonate Dura-Bulb line of bulbs. While not as perfectly authentic as our vintage style glass bulbs, their color is infused directly into their plastic shells, rather than a applied as a coating, offering a consistent, even finish with no possibility of pinholes.
